Boys lacrosse: Yorktown slams the door on Scarsdale, earns first win of the season

SCARSDALE – These guys are ornery.

A fast and furious effort by a determined Yorktown defense created needed havoc on Wednesday and set up an 8-7 win at Scarsdale in the first Able Lax Classic. Jack Duncan netted a man-up goal with 17.2 seconds to go, putting the Huskers in front.

Hunter Mezzatesta created that opportunity, securing a save in close quarters at the other end.

“It was lock down, man,” Yorktown long stick midfielder Chris Constantine said. “We definitely take pride in defense. Our job is just to keep the ball out of the net and get it to our guys on the offensive end to make things happen.”

Yorktown countered Raiders’ faceoff standout Colby Baldwin at the X with a pole, hoping to prevent breakaways. The Penn State commit went 18 for 19 on draws and set the early tone by crashing in and scoring four seconds into the game.

“We have some guys who are pretty good on defense so we thought we could guard people, but when you play that much defense, it’s hard to succeed,” Huskers coach Tim Schurr said.

Yorktown closed with a 4-1 run.

Justin Meyreles powered in to make it a one possession game in the final minute of the third quarter and Duncan converted the equalizer on the run, knotting the score, 6-6, before the horn. Ryan Vogel set up another Duncan goal in the opening minutes of the fourth, but Jake Goldstein picked up a rebound and evened the score for Scarsdale with 6:15 to go. Duncan was the go-to when the Huskers went man-up in the final minute of play and he found time and space.

“We had a play and it went the way it was supposed to,” he said. “We didn’t start the season off the way we would’ve liked, but I think this is going to get the boys rolling.”

What it means

And beating the repeat Section 1 Class A champions is a big deal, even for the Huskers.

“Scarsdale is a great program,” Constantine said. “They have great players and great coaches, so to pull this off means something.”

Player of the game

Hunter Mezzatesta introduced himself to Section 1. He was especially good under pressure and came up with 15 saves.

“The fact that he’s only a freshman is unbelievable,” Constantine said. “I’ve had the honor to play with goalies like Adam Norris and Vito DeBellis, they were greats, but I’m telling you right now, Hunter, that kid is going to be something special.”

They said it

“It was forced turnovers,” Raiders coach James Synowiez said of the second-half slowdown. “Give them credit, they rode like crazy. We talked about it. They’re coached to have that little bit of tenacity, so that was the difference along with a couple of missed timeouts by me. … I’m alright with them being nearsighted for now and letting this one burn a little bit, that way we can learn from it and fix the mistakes we made.”

“Colby is a great player, a returning All-American, and they won virtually every faceoff so we played a lot of defense,” Schurr said of Mezzatesta, Schietinger, Meyreles, Constantine, Ryan Cane, Conor Duncan and Brady McEnroe. “I’m proud of the boys. They stuck together.”

Yorktown will not be 0-3 going into Friday’s showdown at John Jay-Cross River, so this win relieved some of the pressure.

What makes the performance remarkable is the sheer amount of defense the Huskers played.
