Boys lacrosse: Rye uses diversified attack to overpower Niskayuna in Class B regional

LATHAM – The back and forth suits Rye fine.

The Garnets were all smiles when Niskayuna attempted to go shot for shot with the Section 1 champions.

Bad idea.

Nine players climbed on the Rye bus with at least one goal in the book during an 18-8 win over Niskayuna in a NYSPHSAA Class A regional championship at Shaker High School on Saturday.

“We’ve preached that all year,” Garnets coach Steve Lennon said of his team’s selfless approach. “That is one of our biggest improvements. Each game it’s going to be a different person. You’ve got to get everyone hot and doing what they do well. That’s why we designed our offense the way we did and guys like (All-Americans) Owen Kovacs and Caden Whaling have set such an example.”

Kian McCarthy had the hottest stick, netting five goals.

“Everyone is a baller on this team,” Rye attackman Brendan O’Byrne said. “Everyone can sling the ball, pass the ball, shoot the ball. Everyone is at the highest level.”

McCarthy and Tanner Howson each had a goal in the first 32 seconds of play.

The Silver Warriors answered, but Whaling scored one goal and set up O’Byrne for another. Rye was up 5-3 after one and 8-4 at the half. Niskayuna closed to within 8-6 two minutes into the second half, but O’Byrne ended the run.

“The more good shots we get on cage, the better the chance we’ll win,” McCarthy said. “I think we did a really good job of moving the ball and we got a lot of good shots.  We’re not a one-man team. We have good shooters all over the field and good dodgers all over the field.”

What it means

Rye earned a day off before preparing for the Long Island champion.

The Garnets were practicing at 6 a.m. on Friday and went to prom that evening. Everyone was up early again on Saturday for the ride up to the Capitol region.

“It’s just dedication,” O’Byrne said. “All of these guys want a state title so bad. Winning sectionals was step one. Now we’ve got a regional. We’re not done.”
