Boca Raton girls soccer draws nation's No. 1 team after thrilling PK win in state semifinal

The Boca Raton girls soccer team has earned the right to play for the Class 7A state championship against the No. 1-ranked team in the United States.

The Bobcats defeated Palm Harbor University 2-2 (3-1) on penalty kicks on Friday to clinch a place in next Friday's Class 7A state championship game against Bartram Trail at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand.

Head coach Rachael Grimes has led her squad back to the state championship match for the first time since 2017, where the Bobcats lost 3-1 against Oviedo. Boca Raton reached the 7A state semifinal last year before losing 3-0 to eventual state runner-up Cypress Bay.

Boca Raton (20-3) played spoiler on Friday against the Hurricanes, who entered the match with a perfect 19-0 record, a No. 6 ranking in Florida and No. 8 national ranking according to MaxPreps.

Palm Harbor University led 1-0 after scoring in the 13th minute of the first half, but Boca Raton pulled a goal back with just six minutes remaining in the second half to force extra time.

The Hurricanes retook the lead with five minutes remaining in the second period of overtime, but Boca Raton again equalized with just seconds to the final whistle to send the match into a decisive set of penalty kicks.

Boca Raton will now face one of the nation's best teams in Bartram Trail, which holds the No. 1 national ranking on MaxPreps with a 20-0-2 record.

Bartram Trail's only draws this season came against state powerhouse St. Johns Country Day and national No. 2 Montverde Academy, which is in its first season returning to FHSAA competition after winning back-to-back state championships with a 44-1 overall record in 2018 and 2019.

Bartram Trail won back-to-back state championships in Class 7A in 2020 and 2021.

King's Academy girls basketball returns to state semifinals

The Lions booked a second consecutive appearance in the Class 3A state semifinals with a 60-50 win at Seffner Christian on Friday night.

King's Academy (23-4) has won 13 consecutive games and will face Providence School (22-5) on Wednesday in Lakeland. Cardinal Mooney (20-5) and Miami Country Day (23-7) will play in the other semifinal.

The Lions built a 10-point advantage by halftime and maintained it through the second half in Hillsborough County just outside Tampa.

King's Academy lost 50-42 to Cardinal Mooney in last year's Class 3A state semifinal.
