Trump administration is flouting an order to temporarily lift a freeze on foreign aid, judge says
The Trump administration has kept withholding foreign aid despite a court order and must at least temporarily restore the funding to programs worldwide, a federal judge said Thursday. Judge Amir H. Ali declined a request by nonprofit groups doing business with the U.S. Agency for International Development to find Trump administration officials in contempt of his order, however. The Washington, D.C., district court judge said administration officials had used his Feb. 13 order to temporarily lift the freeze on foreign aid to instead “come up with a new, post-hoc rationalization for the en masse suspension” of funding.

Judge again orders US to unfreeze foreign aid, stops short of contempt
A federal judge on Thursday ordered Trump administration officials to comply with his earlier order that they lift a freeze of nearly all foreign aid, though he stopped short of holding them in contempt of court. The order from U.S. District Judge Amir Ali in Washington came after the administration said in court filings earlier this week that it was keeping thousands of U.S. Agency for International Development and State Department contracts and grants canceled or suspended despite a temporary restraining order that payments be restored. Two non-profit groups, which are among numerous plaintiffs suing over the aid freeze, on Wednesday asked Ali to hold the administration officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio in contempt for "brazen defiance" of his earlier order.

The Trump administration has halted the participation of U.S. scientists in key U.N. climate change assessments, two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters, part of its broader withdrawal from climate change mitigation efforts and multilateral cooperation. The stop-work order affects staff members of the U.S. Global Change Research Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who engage with a key working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It means the U.S. will not attend a major IPCC plenary meeting in Hangzhou, China, next week, to plan the seventh global climate assessment, said one of the sources.

The majority of employees shown the door at the federal tax collector are newly hired workers focused on compliance, which includes ensuring that taxpayers are abiding by the tax code and paying delinquent debts, among other duties. The IRS layoffs, one of the largest purges of probationary workers this year across the government, could also hurt customer service and tax return processing during tax season this year, the union representing Treasury Department employees warned Thursday.

Frank founder Charlie Javice committed a “massive fraud” by telling lies to claim her company had millions of customers when it only had about 400,000 clients as she closed in on a deal in the summer of 2021, Assistant U.S. Attorney Rushmi Bhaskaran told jurors in an opening statement at the trial of Javice and another former Frank executive. Javice's attorney, Jose Baez, blamed the criminal probe that resulted in charges against his client on the nation's largest bank, saying it experienced “buyer's remorse” after the federal government altered regulations so that the purchase no longer was sensible.
