Big Orange Drop On New Year’s Eve Canceled Due To COVID: Report

MIAMI, FL — For the second year in a row, the Big Orange drop at midnight on New Year’s Eve in downtown Miami has been canceled because of COVID-19.

The event was planned to ring in 2022 until the staff organizing the Big Orange drop tested positive for coronavirus, Steve “Mr. Neon” Carpenter told Local 10 News. He began feeling sick on Christmas Day and later tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the most recent COVID-19 Weekly Situation Report from the Florida Department of Health for the week of Dec. 17-23, more than 52,000 new coronavirus cases and a 16.6 percent new case positivity rate were reported in Miami-Dade County during that time.

City Commissioner Joe Carollo told NBC 6 South Florida that the city will possibly host a virtual Big Orange drop on New Year’s Eve.
