Big 12 Wrestling: Iowa State beats Air Force for 11th straight win; UNI beats West Virginia

The stage is now officially set for next week's highly-anticipated battle between Iowa's two Big 12 wrestling programs.

Both the Iowa State and Northern Iowa wrestling teams won again on Saturday. The 13th-ranked Cyclones took out Air Force, 27-12, at Hilton Coliseum in Ames while the 22nd-ranked Panthers walloped West Virginia, 31-10, at the West Gym in Cedar Falls.

Iowa State is now 13-1 overall and 6-0 against the Big 12 Conference, and has won 11 consecutive dual meets, the second-longest active streak in the nation. Northern Iowa, once 0-4, is now 7-5 overall and 6-2 against the Big 12, and has won six in a row.

Next week's in-state Big 12 showdown is set for a 7 p.m. start on Friday at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. The Cyclones have won the last two meetings against Northern Iowa, but the Panthers have won three of the last five.

Here's a look at how both teams did on Saturday:

Without David Carr and Ian Parker, Iowa State wrestling cruises over Air Force

Without a pair of regular starters, Iowa State still won seven of 10 matches against the struggling Falcons, who are now 3-6 overall and 1-6 in the Big 12 after losing to both the Cyclones and Panthers this weekend.

The Cyclones raced out to a 17-0 lead by winning the first four matches, a run capped by a third-period pin from Marcus Coleman at 184 pounds and a 21-6 technical fall from Yonger Bastida at 197. Air Force closed the first half of the dual emphatically, thanks to Wyatt Hendrickson's first-period fall over Sam Schuyler at heavyweight.

Iowa State responded with back-to-back wins to begin the dual's second half. At 125 pounds, Kysen Terukina scored two stall points and a late takedown for an 8-6 win over Jared Van Vleet. Ramazan Attasaouv followed with a 9-2 win over Sidney Flores at 133 and Jarrett Degen added an 11-3 major over Dylan Martinez at 149 pounds.

Neither Ian Parker nor David Carr, the Cyclones' regular starters at 141 and 157, respectively, wrestled on Saturday. Iowa State lost both weights: Charlie Klepps stepped in at 141 and lost to Cody Phippen, 6-1, while Andrew Flora, a state champ from ADM, dropped a 3-0 decision at 157 to Giano Petrucelli.

Northern Iowa wrestling records sixth straight win in 31-10 win over West Virginia

Just like the Cyclones did, Northern Iowa also won seven of 10 matchups to defeat West Virginia at the final home dual at the West Gym this season.

The Mountaineers were also swept by both Iowa State and Northern Iowa this weekend, and are now 5-7 and 0-5. But they actually led the Panthers, 4-0, after Killian Cardinale opened Saturday night's dual with a 12-4 major decision over Brody Teske at 125.

Northern Iowa promptly responded by winning four straight matches, a run that began with back-to-back pins from Kyle Biscoglia (133) and Cael Happel (141) to give the Panthers a 12-4 lead. Colin Realbuto (149) and Derek Holschlag (157) added victories by decision and major decision, respectively, for a 19-4 lead at intermission.

West Virginia did pick up a pair of overtime victories in the dual's second half — Peyton Hall topped Austin Yant, 4-2, at 165, and Michael Wolfgram closed the dual with a 3-1 win over Tyrell Gordon at 285 — but the Panthers countered with three major decision victories from Lance Runyon (174), Parker Keckeisen (184) and John Gunderson (197).
