JULIE HYMAN: Let's get first to that news from Joe Biden that he has, indeed, as many expected, chosen Kamala Harris as his running mate. Our Jessica Smith is here to talk us through this and the historic choice that he has made. We're going to hear directly from Biden and Harris later today.

JESSICA SMITH: Yeah, that's right. This is a really historic moment, as senator Kamala Harris is the first woman of color to appear on a major party's presidential ticket. She is only the third woman to be selected as a vice presidential candidate for a major party. Biden did make this announcement late yesterday afternoon. This comes after months of speculation and weeks of intense pressure.

Harris was one of the names that was floated pretty early on for this gig despite their memorable clash that they had on the debate stage earlier this year. This morning, Biden tweeted out a video, and he talked about Harris and her immigrant parents who taught her to take action. He says that is exactly what the country needs. Let's watch.

KAMALA HARRIS: Growing up, whenever I got upset about something, my mother would look me in the eye and ask, so what are you going to do about it? That's why when I saw broken justice system, I became a lawyer to try and fix it. It's why during the foreclosure crisis, I took on the big banks as California's attorney general. It's why as United States Senator, I have fought to represent people like my mother.

JESSICA SMITH: It didn't take long for President Trump to go on the attack after this announcement was made. He tweeted out a video that the campaign had ready, calling Senator Harris a phony. The Trump campaign is trying to tie her to far left progressives. They're trying to tie her to Senator Sanders and AOC.

But in reality, Senator Harris is a more moderate candidate here. We are expecting to see Biden and Harris together for the first time since this announcement later this afternoon. They will speak around 3:50 in Delaware. So we'll be keeping an eye on what the two of them have to say.
