Ben Johns, Anna Leigh Waters take home gold at Pro Pickleball Masters in La Quinta

Championships were handed out Sunday at the Pro Pickleball Association Masters and many of the sport's elite took home the hardware.

The four-day event took place at the La Quinta Resort and Spa and culminated Sunday with champions crowned and gold medals handed out in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Men's singles: World No. 1 Ben Johns lived up to his ranking, earning the win over former world No. 1 Tyson McGuffin in the championship match. Along with the new title, Ben also received bragging rights and the Franklin Cup as he finished 2021 as the top male singles player. It was a three-game sweep with the unusual scores of 11-1, 12-10, 11-1.

Women's singles: It was 14-year-old Anna Leigh Waters taking the title, edging Lea Jansen in three sets. With the victory, Waters moved up to No. 2 in the world rankings. Waters beat Jansen in four games, sweeping the final three after dropping the opener 3-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-1.

Men's doubles: It was another Johns vs. McGuffin battle, and again it was Team Johns ending up on top. Johns and his partner Matt Wright took down McGuffin and Riley Newman in 3 games 11-5, 12-10, 11-6.

Women's doubles: Catherine Parenteau and Jessie Irvine defeated Lauren Stratman and Irina Tereshenko to claim the title. Parenteau and Irvine won in four games 11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9.

Mixed doubles: The mixed doubles final was the most exciting match of the day as Matt Wright and Lucy Kovalova rallied from two games down to beat Riley and Lindsey Newman 7-11, 6-11,11-9,11-7,11-9.

All of these top players will be returning to the desert in a few weeks as the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championship returns to the desert from Dec. 6 to Dec. 14.
