Belmar celebrates 50th anniversary of its St. Patrick's Day parade

St. Patrick's Day Parade season has begun in New Jersey.

The Belmar/Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade made the march down Main Street on Sunday afternoon in celebration of the parade's 50th anniversary.

The parade, along with Saturday's celebration in Nutley and a Sunday parade in Rutherford, kicked off a series of at least 20 New Jersey parades happening across 22 days leading up to and following St. Patrick's Day on Friday, March 17.

In Belmar, parade chairman Chip Cavanaugh served as the grand marshall. He's been part of the big day since its beginnings − his mother, Jackie, was on the original parade committee, and as a teenager he made corned beef sandwiches that were given out on parade day.
