Beech girls basketball stuns Arlington in TSSAA state tournament with big fourth quarter

MURFREESBORO – No one counted on Beech to be at the TSSAA BlueCross Girls Basketball State Championships, let alone win a game in the tournament.

No one, that is, except for the Lady Buccaneers.

Beech shocked Arlington 62-52 Wednesday in a Class 4A state quarterfinal at Middle Tennessee State's Murphy Center to advance to the semifinals for the first time in 19 years when they finished runner-up to Rick Insell's Shelbyville program.

"This is a dream come true," said Beech senior Christa Dean, who had seven points. "I know my freshman, sophomore, junior years we also had a shot to be in the state tournament, but we just didn't get it done.

"It's been a crazy ride to get here."

Added teammate Bri Ellis, "It's even better because everybody doubted us."

Beech (23-12) plays the Bearden-Blackman winner at 1:15 p.m. Friday in the first of two Class 4A semifinals.

Ellis led Beech with 22 points. She also had six rebounds and three assists. Bailey Ford had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Aindsley Long led Arlington with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Teammate Brittani Wells added 13 points and five rebounds.

Arlington finished its season 22-5. The Lady Tigers were ranked sixth in the final Associated Press Class 4A rankings and ninth in the final regular season Tennessee Super 25 high school girls basketball rankings by the USA TODAY Sports Network.

Beech was not ranked in either poll.

Arlington led 41-39 after the third quarter and appeared primed to reach its first semifinal since 2020 when the Lady Tigers were one of four Class AAA teams remaining when the state tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But then Arlington went cold. The Lady Tigers scored just 11 points in the fourth quarter and only two field goals in the final 3:36 as Beech ended the game on an 11-2 run.

"We were getting outworked as far as rebounding and helping out on the help side," Arlington coach Ashley Shields said. "I just felt like if we kind of buckled down toward the stretch it would have been a totally different ballgame."
