Area Roundup: Eight locals earn a spot on All-CIF-Southern Section soccer teams

Eight local soccer players earned a spot on All-CIF-Southern Section teams after leading their squads on lengthy postseason runs.

There were four boys and four girls named to the teams, highlighted by Oak Hills’ Sydney Middaugh, the Mojave River League’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Middaugh and teammate Alyssa Vernon received a nod to the All-Division 3 team.

Middaugh, a junior, scored 24 goals of her team’s 52 total goals, and assisted on five others. Vernon, a sophomore, scored nine goals on the season and like her teammate assisted on five others.

Also making first teams in girls action is Riverside Prep forward Sierra Parker Hill and CIMS’ Kimora Durham.

Parker Hill helped lead the Silver Knights to the quarterfinals of the Div. 6 playoffs. The senior scored 17 goals to go along with a team-high 16 assists.

Durham, a midfielder, earned a spot on the All-Div. 7 team after scoring five goals on the season with one assist. But Durham’s contributions to the team were more felt on the defensive side as she is credited with 41 steals, which is second best on the team.

On the boys side, Hesperia’s Jorge Negrete was named to the Div. 3 team after helping lead the team to the quarterfinals. Negrete, a sophomore, scored seven goals with six assists over 12 games, according to MaxPreps.

Granite Hills’ Sergio Torres, a defender, earned a spot on the Div. 5 team. Torres, who scored two goals and assisted on 12, was a key part for the Cougars’ defense that allowed just 17 goals in 18 games. Granite Hills made a run to the Div. 5 quarterfinals.

Adelanto’s Damian Espinoza was named to the Div. 6 after leading the Saints to the quarterfinals. Espinoza scored a team-high 23 goals along with five assists.

AAE defender Tommy Shore also earned a spot on the Div. 7 team.

PREP BASEBALL

Sultana 6, Oak Hills 5

At Hesperia, the Sultans rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday afternoon for their first win in Mojave River League play.

Down two runs in the seventh inning, Geoffrey Rodriguez and Cole McCoy-Sharp both singled and came around to score on a triple by Calliou Estrada to tie the game. The Bulldogs intentionally walked the next two batters and Estrada scored the game-winning run when Nick Pierson was hit by a pitch.

Estrada ended the day 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs, and Pierson went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run.

For Oak Hills, Tyler Martinez went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Austin Allan and Aiden Caporale both went 2 for 2 with a walk and run.

The Bulldogs (4-7-1, 1-2 Mojave River League) host Burroughs on Wednesday, while Sultana (10-4-1, 1-2 MRL) travels to Serrano.

Excelsior 9, University Prep 3

At Victorville, the Eagles kicked off Cross Valley League action with a victory over the Jaguars on the road Friday afternoon.

Nate Creason picked up the victory on the mound for the Eagles. He allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings and struck out nine. He also hit a home run in a three-run sixth inning.

Quentin Steele went 3 for 4 with four stolen bases; Quentin Krogsgaard went 3 for 4 with two runs; Brandon Steele went 2 for 4 with an RBI and run; and Travis Sorenson went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

For University Prep, Johnny Salas went 2 for 4 and Avery Pop and Cameron Stinnett each recorded a hit, RBI and a run.

The Eagles (3-7) are back in action Wednesday against Big Bear, while University Prep (7-5-1) hosts Hesperia Christian on April 1.

Mendoza leads way at first CVL meet

At Helendale, CIMS’ Miguel Mendoza led all showers at one over par (37) at Silver Lakes Country Club on Monday afternoon.

ACE had six shooters end in the top 10, as Bryce Johnson led the team with a 39. Excelsior’s Sam Jakubec finished third at 42.
