Apple tracks iPhones looted from its stores

Yahoo Finance’s Dan Howley joins Kristin Myers to discuss how Apple is tracking iPhones that were stolen from its stores amid looting and civil unrest across the country.

KRISTIN MYERS: I want to quickly get in what Apple is doing tracking phones, right, that were stolen from protests?

DAN HOWLEY: Yeah. So what they're doing is they're using some software that's installed on display devices. I inaccurately said earlier today that it's similar to what we have on our own devices. This is software that's specific to display devices in Apple stores. And basically, what it allows them to do is display a message that says, you know, this is a device that's stolen, it's locked, please return to XYZ location. And then it allows the device to be tracked as well so that they can alert authorities about devices that have been stolen from their stores. And it's something that they set up individually.

On the personal side, for our own iOS devices, we do have a feature that allows us to track them and lock them entirely, but it's two different types of software, really. But this is a way of saying Apple saying to looters, look. You've got this device now. It's just a fancy paperweight. You can't do anything with it. You can't resell it. You might as well just bring it back now.

KRISTIN MYERS: All right. And Apple now down more than half of a percentage point. Thanks so much, Dan.

DAN HOWLEY: Thank you.
