Amarillo Fire Department responds to mechanic shop explosion Friday afternoon
The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a fire and explosion at a collision repair shop located in the 2000 block of South Garfield on Friday afternoon.
AFD crews arrived on the scene of the two-alarm fire at 12:25 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from an employee about smoke coming from the building, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the workshop and multiple vehicles fully involved in the fire. While firefighters were pulling hoselines off the trucks, an explosion occurred on the south side of the workshop.

The fire is believed to have been started from a cutting torch that had been used by the workers prior to going to lunch, but an official cause of the fire had not yet been determined. The explosion was caused by an acetylene torch, fire officials said.
Workers nearby said that they heard the explosion and could see the smoke rising from the area, with AFD units arriving soon after. Eight units and 26 firefighters responded to the scene.
The fire was brought under control by 1:09 p.m. No injuries were reported. The scene is still under investigation by the Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office.
