Alabama Morning Drive: Alabama football adds strength assistant

Good morning and welcome back to your Tuesday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. Even with the football team on spring break, we have some news to report regarding the coaching staff. We will also take a look at a familiar face who will be calling Alabama basketball’s round of 64 matchup in the NCAA Tournament.

There is never a dull moment in the Alabama athletics news cycle and Roll Tide Wire will be here every step of the way.

Let’s get right to it!

First…football coaching staff changes…

David Ballou has a new strength assistant

On Monday, we learned that Alabama football strength coach David Ballou has a new assistant in Rick Danison. Danison has spent the last two seasons at Michigan State working for former Nick Saban assistant Mel Tucker. Ballou and Danison have a prior relationship having worked together at Indiana.

The addition of Danison was not the only notable staff change. It has now been revealed that both Sal Sunseri and Drew Svoboda will move to off-the-field roles and become assistants to the head coach.

Next…a familiar face on the call for Bama hoops…

Well, this might be awkward

The TV schedule and announcers for the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament have been revealed and former Alabama men’s basketball coach Avery Johnson will be on the call for Alabama’s matchup on Friday afternoon.

Johnson led the Crimson Tide from 2015-19 and lead the Tide to the NCAA Tournament in 2018.

The full TV schedule and announcer teams can be viewed here.

Finally…NFL updates…

A pair of former Tide players sign new NFL deals

The NFL offseason kicked into overdrive on Monday with the opening of free agency. There are plenty of former Crimson Tide players who are on the open market but a couple has already landed new deals.

Linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton re-signed with the Detriot Lions where he spent the 2021 season. Wide receiver Robert Foster will reunite with one of his former college offensive coordinators in Brian Daboll with the New York Giants.

That is going to put an end to our Tuesday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone has a safe and happy day. Make sure to stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all the latest on the Alabama Crimson Tide!
