Adrian College wrestling's Nowicki earns second national title
ADRIAN — After two years, Adrian College's Zoe Nowicki won her second 136 pound national title Saturday at the Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships, with a 4-0 decision.
In 2020, Nowicki won the 136 pound title at Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association Nationals. Nowicki then took fifth at the NCWWC meet.
Last season, wrestling at 143, Nowicki once again took fifth at the NCWWC meet.
This season, Nowicki moved back down to 136 and went to work, getting a pin, tech fall and won an 8-4 decision to get to the final on Saturday.
Nowicki took on Augsburg's Blanche `Nina` Kemu Makem and picked up 4-0 to earn herself and the Bulldogs program a second national title.
Nowicki wasn't the only NCWWC All-American, freshman Nyla Burgess finished a stellar weekend by taking fourth at 155 pounds.
Burgess picked up a tech fall before losing by tech fall to the eventual national champion. Burgess then picked up a pin, 9-8 decision and 5-2 decision before taking a tech fall loss in the third-place match.
MEN'S HOCKEY
Adrian 12, St. Norbert 3: At Adrian, the Bulldogs picked up their 28th-consecutive win and claimed the Harris Cup with a dominating performance against their rivals from St. Norbert.
Adrian (28-1) scored early and often, scoring the first goal in 1:45 and creating a 4-2 lead going into the second period.
In the second, the Bulldogs went off for six goals to go up 10-3 and added two more goals in the third.
Zach Goberis scored two goals and had two assists while Matus Spodniak and Jaden Shields each scored a goal and added two assists.
Alessio Luciani scored two goals while Terry Ryder, Ty Enns and Zachary Heintz each had a goal and assist while Sam Ruffin had two assists.
Dante Spagnuolo, Tyler Coykendall and Ryan Pitoscia all scored a goal while Matt Eller and Rex Moe each had an assist.
Cameron Gray had 20 saves in the win.
The Bulldogs now wait until Monday morning to see where they fall in the NCAA Division III tournament.
TRACK AND FIELD
Siena Heights at NAIA Nationals: At Brookings, S.D., Zachary Gipple claimed NAIA All-American honors in the shot put at the NAIA indoor national championships.
Gipple had throw of 17 meters to take fourth in the nation.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Adrian 24, Earlham 5: At Adrian, the Bulldogs moved to 4-0 with a dominating win against Earlham.
Derek Hassel scored four goals and had an assist while Michael Jonas had four assists and a goal. Peyton Gasche had three goals and assist while Chris French and Brett Koczenasz had two goals and two assists and Owen Kelly had a goal and three assists.
Riley Edwards and Travis Fox each had three goals while Eli McComb had two goals and an assist. Cameron Reed, Trenton Garcia and Steven Martin all had a goal while Jake Coakley and Max Leventis each had assists.
Sam Spangler made two saves while Tyler Swanson had one.
SOFTBALL
Siena Heights vs. St. Thomas, Bethel: At Kissimmee, Fla., the Saints opened the season 2-0 with a pair of wins against St. Thomas (5-3) and Bethel (7-2).
In the season opener, SHU came out firing with all five runs coming in the first inning.
Courtnee Chappetta hit a 3-run home run while Maddie Herrera doubled in a run in the season-opening frame.
Sam Hill went 2-for-4 with a run while Julia Hogston was 2-for-3.
Kelsey Uhl got the win as she tossed a complete game in the circle, going seven innings and giving up three runs, one earned, on a walk and two strikeouts.
The Saints followed it up with four runs in the first inning of the 7-2 win against Bethel.
Alyssa Marshall drove in a pair of runs in the first with a double as she went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs and stole a base. Hill went 4-for-4 with two runs and stole three bases.
Blissfield 2021 graduate Abby Fisher went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and Chappetta went 2-for-3 with an RBI and stole a base.
Jordan Green tossed a gem in the circle as she recorded 15 strikeouts and gave up no walks while allowing two runs, on three hits in a complete game.
BASEBALL
Adrian 16, Greensboro 1: At Mt. Berry, Ga., the Bulldogs went off again while Maxwell Denny pitched a gem to get Adrian back on track after a loss on Friday.
Denny took a no-hitter into the sixth inning where he gave up a 2-out, solo home run. He ended up going 8 1/3 innings and giving up the one run, on two hits and two walks while striking out six.
The score was 0-0 until the fourth when fourth-ranked Adrian (4-2) posted three runs and followed it with a three-run fifth, four in the sixth, five in the seventh and another in the eighth.
Thomas Miller continued to swing a hot bat this week, going 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Kevin Cardentey went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base. AJ Miranda went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a home run and two runs scored.
Don Goodes went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and a stolen base while Andrew Atherton was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Nathan Mix was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Ryan Davis hit a 2-run home run while Adrian High School graduate Andrew Hribar went hit a triple, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Adrian Gutierrez added an RBI double.
Siena Heights at Warner: At Lake Wales, Fla., the Saints dropped to 1-7 as they lost both ends of a doubleheader to Warner, 6-2 and 3-0.
Adam Wilding drove in both runs in the loss in the opener while Parker Swartz took the loss going 3 2/3 innings while giving up two runs, on two hits and four walks while striking out two.
In Game 2, Christian Jabiro took the loss going five innings and giving up seven hits and a walk while striking out two.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Anderson 11, Adrian 7: At Anderson Ind., the Bulldogs fell to 1-3 on the season as they fell behind early to Anderson.
Adrian trailed 2-0 out of the gate and 4-2 after the first. Anderson took an 8-3 lead at the half and 10-3 after three.
Olive Stevens and Cassidy McGeorge each scored twice while Delaynie Harris had three assists. Carlee Casteel had a goal and an assist while Zoe Weber and Brooke Barabas each had a goal.
Avery Huxter made eight saves.
