A 29-year-old man was taken into custody after a six-hour SWAT callout stemming from a report of shots fired Monday morning in a Shallowater home. It was the second hours-long SWAT response to an allegedly armed and barricaded man in two days at a Lubbock-area home, and both incidents were apparently unrelated.

In the latest standoff, deputies were dispatched to the 5400 block of North County Road 1570 at 5:03 a.m. Monday in reference to shots fired. When law enforcement arrived, they could hear shots being fired inside the residence, according to a release from the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office.

During the initial investigation deputies were able to determine Joshua Nail was the only person inside the residence. Negotiators attempted to contact Nail to de-escalate the situation, but he allegedly refused to leave the residence, according to the news release.

At approximately 11:06 a.m. officials took him into custody without incident on a warrant issued for deadly conduct. Other circumstances leading to the standoff were not immediately clear as the investigation is ongoing.

Weekend SWAT standoff in north Lubbock

A man remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center Monday after an eight-hour standoff with police Saturday evening into early Sunday morning in north Lubbock, which police say was prompted in reference to the recent death of a 2-month-old infant.

A release from Lubbock Police Department states David Garcia, 38, was allegedly armed and threatening self-harm at a residence in the 3100 block of Auburn Street when a female called the police department's communications center at 5:24 p.m. Saturday. She was not at the residence.

Officers responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the residence before requesting assistance from LPD SWAT and negotiators at 5:41 p.m.

According to the release, Garcia discharged his firearm multiple times in the direction of officers outside his home, while officers deployed chemical gas into the home throughout the call.

Though circumstances of the infant's death remain unknown, Garcia was named as a suspect early on in the case. Investigators were able to determine that the infant "had injuries consistent with abuse, and the (April 20) death was believed to be criminal in nature."

An arrest warrant was obtained for Garcia on a charge of first-degree felony aggravated assault, which he was arrested for at the conclusion of the standoff.

Additional charges are still expected, and the investigation is ongoing, according to LPD.
