5 stats about the Texas Tech-Texas basketball rivalry you didn't know

Everything's bigger in Texas — including the sports rivalries.

Texas Tech men's basketball will square off once again this season against the University of Texas on Saturday. The two teams last met earlier this month where the Red Raiders claimed a 77-64 victory over the Longhorns.

The two teams have a storied rivalry dating back almost 100 years. Since the 1949-1950 season, Texas Tech and Texas have met on the hardwood 144 times. Of those 144 games, the Red Raiders were successful 63 times, which equates to a win-loss percentage of .438.

Texas Tech's longest win streak against Texas basketball is 10 games

For five seasons (1968-1973) the Red Raiders dominated the Longhorns, winning 10 consecutive matchups out of 12. The largest margin of victory was 19 points in February 1970. The smallest margin of victory — 3 points — came in 1973.

Conversely, the late 1990s and early 2000s weren't kind to Texas Tech — they suffered a 13-game losing streak against Texas from January 1998 to March 2003.

Texas Tech once beat the Texas Longhorns by 31 points

The date was Feb. 19, 1966. Eugene Gibson was Texas Tech's coach. The stage was set in Austin. And the Red Raiders strolled in, opened a can of you-know-what and slaughtered the Longhorns 117-86.

While it took Texas just shy of 24 years to do it, they got their revenge in 1990 when they routed Texas Tech 109-71.

Texas Tech basketball doesn't fare well against Texas when games reach overtime

The Red Raiders and Longhorns have only ever reached overtime in eight of their games. But, when they did, Texas Tech lost six of the bouts.

The highest scoring game between Texas Tech and Texas took place in 1994

It took two overtimes to make it happen, but Texas Tech won the Feb. 19, 1994, battle against Texas 128-125.

But, sometimes, games are memorable by how little points are scored. Such as the case from a Valentine's Day massacre in 2014 where the Red Raiders lost to the Longhorns 56-41.

Texas Tech barely edged out by Texas in total points scored

Of all 144 games played to date since the 1949-1950 season, a total of 20,623 points have been scored in Texas Tech vs Texas matchups. Texas has scored 10,476 of those points, barely edging out Texas Tech's 10,147.
