4-star quarterback Jake Merklinger commits to Tennessee football in 2024 class
Tennessee football got a commitment from 4-star quarterback Jake Merklinger, beating out Georgia, Michigan State and North Carolina for the 2024 prospect.

Merklinger, from Calvary Day School in Savannah, Georgia, took an unofficial visit to UT on Saturday and attended spring practice.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Merklinger is ranked the No. 6 quarterback and No. 55 prospect overall in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports Composite. He had scholarship offers from 25 Power 5 schools, including nine from the SEC.
Merklinger can sign with the Vols during the early signing period in December.
NICO IAMALEAVA IN SPRING PRACTICE Why quarterback is asking a million questions but not talking NIL
VOLS YOUTH MOVEMENT Why these Tennessee freshmen should excite Vols fans as much as Nico Iamaleava
With his senior season still ahead, Merklinger has passed for 80 touchdowns as a three-year starter. During his junior season, he completed 67% of his passes for 1,987 yards, 32 TDs and two interceptions. He also rushed for 283 yards and four TDs.
It’s a notable recruiting victory for UT, especially since it already has freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava on the roster. He was a 5-star prospect and the top rated quarterback to sign with the Vols in the 2000s.
The 2023 season will be Joe Milton’s last. Iamaleava is the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster. The Vols, presumably, will add another scholarship quarterback after spring practice.
