'Horrific act': 3 dead, 1 injured after Chicago hit-and-run outside gay bar, police say

Three people were killed and another was injured in a hit-and-run crash in Chicago outside a famous gay bar early Sunday, police said.

Chicago Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said in a news conference Monday that an argument started inside the Jeffrey Pub, a gay bar on Chicago's South Side, that spilled out into the street around 5:00 a.m. Sunday. The suspect in the hit-and-run then entered a car and “commits this horrific act,” striking the men who were arguing, he said.

Three victims were pronounced dead at a Chicago hospital, and the fourth was taken to a different Chicago hospital.

The Chicago Sun reported the victims as Donald Huey, 25, Devonta Vivetter, 27, and a 23-year-old man whose name has not been released yet, citing police and the Cook County medical examiner.

A shocking video, shared on TMZ, appears to show a group of people fighting in the street when a fast-moving car strikes them, but police declined to comment on the video Monday.

No one has been arrested in connection to the hit-and-run, authorities said, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police recovered the vehicle that was used to hit the group of men, according to Deenihan. No one has been arrested because "you can’t charge a car with a crime, obviously," he said. "We need to know who the driver was."

The attack "appears to be intentional," Deenihan said but is not being investigated as a hate crime at the moment as police don't have additional information.

American roads have been plagued with an increase in pedestrian fatalities in recent years. New data shows those deaths are disproportionally affecting Black and Hispanic American pedestrians and bikers.
