23-year-old man on life support after being caught in rip current off Daytona Beach

A 23-year-old man was on life support Tuesday morning after being caught in a rip current at Daytona Beach Monday night, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

Lt. Antwan Lewis, a spokesman for the department, said a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were pulled out into the ocean near the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort.

The two were brothers, according to Volusia County Beach Safety. The rescue service reported the age of the older brother as 22. Names were not provided by either agency.

Beach Safety lifeguards responded along with the fire department. A helicopter was also dispatched.

Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Alex Miller said the incident occurred at 8:29 p.m. in the 100 block of Atlantic Avenue just north of the Main Street Pier by the clock tower.

Beach patrol got a call that two people were struggling in the water. When officers got to the older man he made it to the beach but reported that his 17-year-old brother was at sea, Miller said.
