13 Iconic Princess Diana Outfits Recreated in 'The Crown's' Fourth Season

This season, The Crown finally introduces a long-awaited character: the Princess of Wales. Even for a royal, Princess Diana was an icon, loved around the world for many reasons—not the least of which was her oft-imitated style.

But the polished, confident princess most fans remember isn't who we meet in The Crown, not quite. As costume designer Amy Roberts recently explained to Town & Country, the version of Diana that actress Emma Corrin portrays is just getting her footing. In the beginning of the season, she's naïve and uncertain, not far removed from high school, but as the episodes progress, the story takes"that girl on this momentous journey, where she meets the handsome prince, she’s engaged, and then she’s kind of whisked away to the palace," Roberts says.

"I never feel she quite got her style," she adds, recalling the puff-sleeved dress Diana wears shortly after moving into the palace in episode three, when she fails to curtsy to the Windsors in the right order. "She just looks awkward and like a little girl." Later, for her and Charles's royal tour of Australia, "I just felt it was like dressing up a doll. I never felt she was being allowed to be a real person, if that makes sense."

But by the finale, something's changed. "I think slowly, slowly, as our story progresses, and sadly the marriage becomes more and more problematic, she kind of realizes her power—her power with her attractiveness and how people warm to her. And so I think her style, at the end, points a bit more to the Diana that I think people remember particularly and expect."

But that doesn't mean there weren't plenty of outfits that people do remember from this period of Diana's life—many of which were recreated, nearly stitch-for-stitch, for this season of The Crown. Below, see some of the looks the show pulled from real life.

During Diana's "Balmoral Test" in The Crown, she dons a pink, patterned sweater that will be familiar to royal watchers.

The picture on the right was taken during the Braemar Highland Games in Scotland, the year after the Princess married Charles, but in The Crown, she wears a very similar dress prior to her wedding.

It seems that the pink outfit Diana wore at Highgrove in 1986 served as inspiration for one of the looks The Crown put her in during her engagement.

Roberts chose to replicate the casual shirtdress that Diana wore to her and Charles's wedding rehearsal.

Of course, The Crown had to go all-out in creating a facsimile of Princess Diana's wedding dress.

Both Charles and Diana's outfits from their visit to Ayers Rock in Australia were made to look like the real thing.

The series also chose to recreate the exact look that Princess Diana wore to meet the Australian Prime Minister and his wife during their tour.

Roberts modified the dress Diana wore to meet with Terrigal Beach lifeguards just a touch.

The fluttery blue ballgown that the Princess of Wales wore to an event in Sydney made an appearance in The Crown.

Another one of Diana's real Australian tour dresses made an appearance during episode six, though it was recreated in a slightly different shade.

The Crown recreated not just Diana's dress from this photo opp with Charles and baby William, but the whole event.

The white gown and matching shrug the Princess wore during her solo trip to New York made an appearance in the latter half of season four.

The final look Diana wears in season four appears to be inspired by one of Diana's Catherine Walker gowns, which would later go up for auction.
