On March 16, eight people were shot at three massage parlors in the Atlanta area. Six of the people killed were of Asian descent, and all but one were women. While law enforcement has not yet labeled this a hate crime, it has raised fear in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Stop AAPI Hate, an organization formed to combat anti-Asian discrimination and violence during the COVID pandemic, released a statement calling the shooting an "unspeakable tragedy—for the families of the victims first and foremost, but also for the Asian American community, which has been reeling from high levels of racist attacks over the course of the past year." The AAPI community and allies came together online as well as in-person to stand united against hate.
